The VCE Structure

VCE is taught in years 11 and 12 of secondary school in Victoria. Each VCE subject is organised into units. Students usually choose to study five or six subjects each year at years 11 and 12. The choice of subjects depends on the school attended as each school decides which subjects they will offer. Completion of an English subject is compulsory.

Most, but not all, VCE subjects consist of four units. Each unit comprises one semester of study.

Units 3 and 4 of any subject must be studied in sequence, whereas Units 1 and 2 can be mixed and matched. Students are not required to complete all the units of a subject as part of the VCE course. On completing a unit, a student receives an 'S' (Satisfactory), or an 'N' (Not Satisfactory). If the student does not intend to apply to proceed to tertiary education, a 'satisfactory' result (indicating a 'pass' or satisfactory completion of a Unit) is all that is required to graduate with the VCE.

In order to receive the VCE and an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), students must satisfactorily complete  English/ESL, the only compulsory subject plus three other subjects at Yr 12 level. The Units (3&4) shall be done sequentially. The ATAR received ranges from 0 to 99.95 in increments of 0.05.

An ATAR score of 60 indicates that a student has achieved a higher ATAR than 60% of the state.
